FAQ
Crawl Space & Floor Insulation questions
My floors are freezing in winter — is that the crawl space?
Usually. Either there is no insulation under the floor, or the batts that were there have sagged and fallen out, which is extremely common in houses past twenty years old. Either way you are heating the crawl space instead of the room.
Why does insulation keep falling out of my crawl space?
Because it was held up by nothing but friction or a few strands of wire, and humidity plus gravity eventually win. Re-installing it the same way gets the same result, so it has to be supported properly the second time.
Should the crawl space be vented or sealed?
That depends on the crawl space — its moisture, grade, ductwork and whether there is a ground vapour barrier. We would need to get under there before recommending one over the other, and we will tell you which one we think it is and why.
