Why does batt installation quality matter so much?
Because a batt only performs at its rated value when it fills the cavity completely and is not compressed. Gaps at the edges, batts stuffed behind wiring, or a batt jammed into a cavity all cut real-world performance. Careful cutting and splitting around obstructions is the difference between a rated wall and a wall that only looks insulated.
Can you insulate interior walls just to cut down noise?
Yes. Sound batts in bedroom, bathroom, laundry and media-room walls are one of the cheapest comfort upgrades in a remodel, and it is far easier to do while the framing is still open.
